We created these cloth placemats in collaboration with Tensira — a celebrated textile house founded by a Guinean and Finnish husband-and-wife duo that blends Scandinavian aesthetics with West African weaving and dyeing techniques. We dreamt up their simple yet unexpected designs in-house, taking our inspiration from vintage French ticking and the varied band sizes found on India’s traditional striped dhurrie rugs. Tensira’s team of skilled craftswomen then brought our design to life using cotton that was spun and woven by hand and dyed in one of two colorways — Jaipur’s soft, rosy-beige or Ciel’s fresh bluish-grey.
