Antique Octopus Trap Vase

Sourced in England, this handthrown terracotta pot is an octopus trap  sunk to the seafloor on a weighted line overnight, retrieved in the morning, the octopus waiting inside. The practice dates back to ancient Greece and remained unchanged for centuries along the coastlines of Spain, Italy, and North Africa. The white residue across the body is sea salt and barnacles -  the natural patina of a pot that spent its life between the ocean floor and the open air.

Style it: Set on a kitchen counter, stone hearth, or garden shelf and let the texture and warm terracotta speak for itself - fill with dried botanicals or leave it empty.
