Palio Serving Bowl, The Crested Porcupine

This fabulous serving bowl is a celebration of the Palio—a wild and intoxicating horse race that takes place in the main piazza of Siena, Italy. Each piece displays a symbol that correlates to one of the teams, based on the different districts in the city.

Istrice (The Crested Porcupine): Traditionally Istrice residents were blacksmiths. Istrice’s adversary Contrada is the "Lupa" (She-wolf), since 1934. Their motto is: "Sol per difesa io pungo" (I prick only for self-defense). Istrice has the title of Contrada Sovrana (Sovereign Contrada).
