An giant in the world of Italian mid-century design, Pietro Fornasetti saw every object as a canvas. Inspired by both classic Italian art and the burgeoning Surrealist movement, the visionary artist and designer created a prolific collection of imaginative, otherworldly illustrations throughout his lifetime, which he used to decorate his never-ending line of furniture and home accessories — art for everyday use, as he called it. Our Fornasetti Tra le Nuvole Candle is housed in a handmade porcelain jar adorned with the face of Fornasetti’s muse, the Edwardian-era opera singer Lina Cavalieri. Fornasetti created hundreds of illustrations of the soprano throughout his career, two of which are found here — Cavalieri among the clouds, with eyes open on one side and serenely shut on the other.
